There are many types of eye problems and visual disturbances which may include: blurred vision, halos, blind spots, floaters and other symptoms. Blurred vision is the loss of visual acuity and the inability to see small details. Blind spots (scotomas) are dark "holes" in the visual field in which you can not see anything.

Changes in vision, blind spots, halos around lights, blurring or dimness in vision should always be evaluated by a medical professional. These changes may represent an eye disease, aging, eye injury or a disease like diabetes that affects many organs in the body.

Common Causes

What to expect at the doctor's office

The doctor will check vision, eye movements, pupils, the back of the eye (called the retina) and eye pressure when needed. If required, there will be a general medical evaluation.

The doctor will ask questions about visual problems such as:

* When did this begin? Did it occur suddenly or gradually?

* How often does it occur? How long?

* When does it occur? "At night? "In the morning?

* Is the problem in one or both eyes?

* Blurred vision or double presents?

* Do you have blind spots?

* Are there areas of black or not seen?

* Is there no side vision (peripheral)?

* Are halos (circles of light) seen around shiny objects or lights?

* Do you see flashing lights or zigzag lines?

* Do stationary objects seem to move?

* Are colors missing? Is it difficult differentiation?

The functioning of the eye in many respects resembles that of a camera. A picture is snapped on a film but we do not see it until the film has been developed. A picture is flashed on the retina of the eye but we do not see it as a picture until the mind interprets it.

It is the rested mind that learns and retains what it learns. All of us know the student who stays up all night before an examination, feverishly going over the material, and then fails the test because he was so tired he forgot the answers to questions which he actually knew.

Valuable as memory is as an aid to seeing, it cannot be forced. Everyone has experienced the exasperation that comes with trying to force himself to remember a name. "It is as familiar to me as my own," he exclaims impatiently. "It is on the tip of my tongue!"

By trying to force memory you are creating a mental strain; just by staring at an object, trying to force the eye to see, you set up an eyestrain. In both cases you defeat your object. Maximum efficiency comes only with relaxation. When the mind is relaxed and the tensions are released, the name you struggled so hard to recapture is waiting for you with no effort on your part


Our second mental aid to better eyesight is imagination. By imagination I mean the ability to conjure up sharp mental images, to recall with the eyes closed a clear picture of a particular object.

I find the word images is a source of confusion to many people. Ribot in his Psychology of Attention gives an excellent definition: "Image is not a photograph but a revival of the sensorial and motor elements that have built up perception. In proportion as its intensity increases, it approaches more and more to the condition of the origination."

Now imagination, as we are using the term, is dependent upon memory. It is a mental synthesis of ideas from elements remembered separately. We can imagine-or visualize-an object only as well as we can remember it. For example, if we are to try to imagine the sharp clear image of a big capital C, we can do so only if we remember perfectly how a capital C looks. The effect that perfect imagination can have in improving vision has been demonstrated again and again.

Some people discover that they have the ability to visualize vividly, quickly, and without any difficulty. The majority lacks it. The type of tension from which you suffer affects your ability to visualize. The difficulty is more pronounced in troubles of accommodation, particularly with myopia.

The degree of attention and interest you have is the measure of the memory you will have, and your memory will influence your capacity to imagine or visualize.

Sight is dependent upon memory and imagination rather than the physical organs. Therefore, eyes are never too old to be corrected. As long as the mind can function, old eyes can be taught to see better. Eyes are intended to be used, and when properly used, better eyesight will be the result.

And after 20 years, they can even expect to have the same chance of developing it as a person who has never smoked in their life. Currently, smoking is the only sure thing that has been shown to cause Macular Degeneration. So not only will stopping smoking potentially help improve your eyesight by combating irritation and red eye, but it will also aid the long term health of your eyes by helping to prevent developing Age Related Macular Degeneration.

There are other things that can lead to eye damage, such as eye strain. The consequences aren't nearly as subtle or serious as smoking, but it can still be a factor that could be harming your eyesight. Any harm caused is usually temporary, so if eye strain is hampering your eyesight then you can expect to see a quick improvement in your vision once you correct it.

Finally, perhaps the most effective method, you can carry out the act of palming. Palming is closing your eyes tightly and then covering them with the palms of your hands. The purpose of this is to block out all outside sources of light and interference while your eyes are rested. Do this for thirty to sixty seconds, and then remove your hands and open your eyes. As you may notice, your eyes will feel like you just started looking at the monitor, or like you just woke up from a nap. Thus, this is a very effective method of relief for your eyes that can be useful when you have to stare at a computer screen for extended periods of time.

Trying to commit all this new information to memory is the main cause of eye strain in children who are encouraged to absorb this information every day, whether they find it interesting or not. At no time are the children given enough breaks to allow the eyes to relax and ease the strain. This is where the Bates Method comes into play.

The Bates Method is actually straightforward and simple to put into practice. He created a large chart of shapes and letters which was placed on the classroom wall, and the schoolchildren encouraged to look at this chart whenever they felt overwhelmed with the endless information intake. Even looking at the chart for just three minutes per day improved the effects of eye strain.

When the Bates Method was introduced into a few schools, teachers quickly noticed a great improvement in concentration and progress, with the eyes being able to relax and therefore removing eyestrain. Unfortunately, the school board of the time felt the method was too distracting and stopped the practice. China, in fact, is the only country that teaches students vision training.

Eyestrain symptoms include: red, watery or irritated eyes; tired achy, or heavy feeling eyelids; trouble focusing; eye muscle spasms; and headache. These symptoms can often be relieved by changing the work environment, resting the eyes, exercising the eyes or wearing the proper glasses. We will talk about each one of these individually.

Changing the work environment

Position the monitor slightly farther away from you than you normally hold your reading material. A viewing distance of between 20 and 28 inches is good. Make sure the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level. Put all material you are working with as close to the screen as possible and try to use a device that keeps it upright. This minimizes the need for your eyes to constantly focus and adjust.

Try to minimize light reflection and glare. You may need to move your desk so that bright lights are not in your field of vision. You can also change light bulbs to a lower wattage and get an anti-glare screen for over your monitor. Remember when your mother told you not to read in the dark or you would ruin your eyes. She was right. Don't use your computer in the dark either. The contrast between the light from the computer screen and the background light will strain your eyes.You can also adjust the contrast controls to be more pleasing to the eyes. Another thing to consider is using larger text. I promise no one will think you're getting old.

Rest your eyes.

Take frequent breaks. If you're in the workplace, just looking away for a few minutes will do. If you're at home, schedule regular breaks and make sure you take them. Continued viewing of the screen will lead to eye fatigue and that gritty feeling. Keep your eyes lubricated by blinking frequently. Most of us don't do this when we're focused on what we're doing. How can you remember to blink? Put a sticky note at the top of your screen with REMEMBER TO BLINK written on it. If that doesn't work or is too distracting, pretend your monitor is a person of the opposite sex and wink at it every so often ... use both eyes though.

Wearing The Proper Glasses

If you wear glasses, you may need to change lenses when using the computer. Some people don't normally wear corrective lenses but may need them for computer work. Check with your eye doctor to make sure you aren't straining your eyes by wearing the wrong lenses.

Healthy Eyes Are The Best Eyes

Keeping your eyes healthy should be as important as keeping your heart healthy. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables that are high in beta carotene. Most yellow and orange vegetables fit into this category. Also, foods rich in lutein are beneficial to your eye health. These include leafy greens, corn and red peppers. Fortunately alternative medicine has come a long way to help matters. For example, you can buy eye sprays now which relieve some eye problems. They do not cure incorrect use of your eyes though, nor do they train us to change our habits to help maintain our vision.

Particularly in the office, if you are mainly doing close up work, proper pacing is of the essence. You can train your eyes in the same way you train your body to adopt better behaviour. I know that might sound like hard work, but this need not the case when you use the modern energy techniques, which are available now.

I have had poor eyesight all my life, I was born with an eye problem and told that I would never drive a car. Well not only do I drive, I often drive without glasses and spend many hours in front of my computer each day.

The vitreous humor is a transparent and viscous liquid that fills the internal space of the eyeball, between the lens and the retina.
