Improve your eyes - The Bates Method

Improve your eyes with a mehtod develped byDr William Bates. He believed passionately that it was possible to improve eyesight naturally and spent many years studying vision problems to demonstrate his theories. He attended Cornell University, graduated and became a teacher and researcher of ophthalmology in the New York area. He went on to produce many eyesight improvement methods, believing that anyone could see without using glasses. The methods he developed, aimed to teach the eyes ways to improve and heal themselves.

Initially, the Bates Method was developed to aid school children in absorbing a great deal of information without straining their eyes. Dr Bates realized during his study that eye problems, mainly caused by bad habits, began in school age children. It is a known fact that children have an inbuilt, natural curiosity to learn new things, but when faced with having an endless stream of uninteresting information to try and memorize, the inevitable result is that the mind gets tired and the eyes become strained.

Trying to commit all this new information to memory is the main cause of eye strain in children who are encouraged to absorb this information every day, whether they find it interesting or not. At no time are the children given enough breaks to allow the eyes to relax and ease the strain. This is where the Bates Method comes into play.

The Bates Method is actually straightforward and simple to put into practice. He created a large chart of shapes and letters which was placed on the classroom wall, and the schoolchildren encouraged to look at this chart whenever they felt overwhelmed with the endless information intake. Even looking at the chart for just three minutes per day improved the effects of eye strain.

When the Bates Method was introduced into a few schools, teachers quickly noticed a great improvement in concentration and progress, with the eyes being able to relax and therefore removing eyestrain. Unfortunately, the school board of the time felt the method was too distracting and stopped the practice. China, in fact, is the only country that teaches students vision training.

However, the Bates Method can be employed by just about anyone. You could, for instance, create your own chart and place it on your office wall. Glancing at the chart occasionally will help to relax the eyes and reduce eyestrain. Training your eyes to relax in this way will help greatly in improving vision not only today but also for the rest of your life.
