Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this eye disease, and there is little that can be done to repair the macular area of the retina once the damage takes place.
Thankfully, smokers who are in the process of quitting or soon to be quitting smoking have something they can look forward to. Statistics have shown that people who quit smoking lower their chances of contracting Macular Degeneration, and after 10 years they will start to have lower risks of developing it. And after 20 years, they can even expect to have the same chance of developing it as a person who has never smoked in their life. Currently, smoking is the only sure thing that has been shown to cause Macular Degeneration. So not only will stopping smoking potentially help improve your eyesight by combating irritation and red eye, but it will also aid the long term health of your eyes by helping to prevent developing Age Related Macular Degeneration.
There are other things that can lead to eye damage, such as eye strain. The consequences aren't nearly as subtle or serious as smoking, but it can still be a factor that could be harming your eyesight. Any harm caused is usually temporary, so if eye strain is hampering your eyesight then you can expect to see a quick improvement in your vision once you correct it.
There are many different things that you can do to improve your eyesight and get better eyesight without glasses by combating eye strain. One of the most common causes of eye strain is from staring at a computer monitor for long periods of time. A major thing to look out for is to make sure that you aren't sitting too close to the monitor. This can actually cause long term eye damage, because since your eyes are so close to the monitor, they become accustomed to viewing things from a short distance and you may find yourself having trouble viewing items from further distances. Another thing to consider is that when our eyes stare at monitors, how much we blink will decline. So if you notice your eyes getting blurry or starting to hurt while looking at the screen, make sure you're blinking properly.
There are also several eye exercises that you can perform to prevent eyestrain and improve your eyesight. Still on the topic of blinking, you can perform a deep wink, which is closing your eyes for 5-7 seconds firmly before you open them widely. Another method is switching your focus to a random object at least twenty feet away from you. Hold your view on the object for a long enough amount of time that your eyes readjust, and then go back to viewing the monitor. Finally, perhaps the most effective method, you can carry out the act of palming. Palming is closing your eyes tightly and then covering them with the palms of your hands. The purpose of this is to block out all outside sources of light and interference while your eyes are rested. Do this for thirty to sixty seconds, and then remove your hands and open your eyes. As you may notice, your eyes will feel like you just started looking at the monitor, or like you just woke up from a nap. Thus, this is a very effective method of relief for your eyes that can be useful when you have to stare at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
